It's the question we get asked most over the counter, and the one people search before buying online. The short answer: it's not that it runs big, it's that it's meant to look that way. The Detroit is cut boxy and cropped on purpose. Once you know that, picking your size is straightforward.
The Detroit is a short jacket. It sits at or just above the waist, with a wide, square body and room through the chest and shoulders. That shape is what makes it look right. Worn properly, it should hang slightly away from the body rather than follow it.
The sleeves are full length and the arms have some room, so you can wear a knit or a hoodie underneath without it pulling.
You want the fit it was designed for. Your normal size gives you the boxy shape with space to layer through autumn and winter. For most people, this is the right call.
You'll mostly wear it over a tee or a light shirt, or you prefer a cleaner line with less volume. Going down one size tightens the chest and shoulders while keeping the cropped length.
Sizing up adds width but barely any length, so it tends to look wide rather than relaxed. If you want something longer in the body, the OG Active Jacket is the better option.
Dearborn canvas starts stiff. For the first few weeks it holds its shape and can feel structured through the shoulders. With wear it softens, relaxes around the arms and moves more with you. If it feels slightly rigid when you first try it on, that's normal. It won't get tighter.
