How to Wear Penny Loafers Without Looking Like You're Off to the Office

The penny loafer used to mean school shoes and office floors. Not anymore. Worn right, it is the easiest way to make jeans, workwear and sweats look like you thought about it, without trying too hard.

Here is how we wear them, starting with the Duke and Dexter Wilde.

Why loafers, why now

A loafer sits between a trainer and a proper shoe. It is smarter than the first and easier than the second. No laces, no fuss, on and off at the door. That is why they have become the shoe people reach for when trainers feel too casual and boots feel too heavy.

The Duke and Dexter Wilde

Duke and Dexter took the classic penny loafer and gave it some personality. The Wilde keeps the traditional shape, with the strap across the top and a low profile, and then adds prints and finishes you will not find anywhere else. This season that includes the Midnight Chateau Sketch and the Fall of Giants. Both are £260.

They are a statement. Let them be the one loud thing in the outfit and keep the rest quiet.

Three ways to wear them

With denim. Straight or loose jeans, cropped or cuffed just above the shoe so the loafer is not swallowed by the hem. A plain tee or knit on top. This is the easiest way in.

With workwear. A canvas jacket like the Carhartt WIP OG Active, a grey hoodie and dark trousers. Workwear and loafers should not work together on paper, and that is exactly why they do.

With sweats. A matching sweat set and a pair of loafers. It sounds wrong until you try it. It turns a lazy day outfit into something deliberate.

Socks or no socks?

In winter, wear socks. A white or cream sock with a loafer is a strong look and keeps things relaxed. Black socks with dark trousers are cleaner and smarter. Save bare ankles for the summer.

Looking after them

Wipe them down after wet days and let them dry naturally, away from a radiator. Store them with shoe trees if you have them. Good loafers last years when they are looked after.

Not ready for a loafer?

Start with the Duke and Dexter Plus Court Kiss sneaker, £230. It has the same attitude in a trainer you can wear every day. Or start smaller with a Duke and Dexter card holder or wallet.
